I thought I would share with you a very short short story that I wrote a while back. I hope you like it!
We were having a dinner party. At least that’s what I understood when I overheard my mom and dad talking. My mom loves to cook but this time she was having some kind of potluck. And she was inviting everyone! I heard her talking on the phone very softly and I knew immediately that she didn’t want me to listen in. Whenever she was on the phone, I always pretended to play with my dolls and sometimes even hummed a little tune so she would think I wasn’t paying any attention. “It’s rude to eavesdrop,” She would say. This time I started playing catch with my dog Dot only he wasn’t interested in getting up. He completely ignored me and started going round and round trying to catch his tail. I guess that was enough to distract my mom because I heard her raise her voice slightly and say, “Lasagne is perfect, thank you. Milly’s favorite.” I knew it! She was throwing me a surprise birthday party! My birthday was after all in two days. I had begged her for a party last week but she said that we had one last year when I turned 10 and she would throw me another when I hit the teens. But that was years away! Rina had a party last month at Fun City where we all got to play laser tag and even Fatty Marty took everyone to Animal Palace where all the kids got to pose with a python. Poor Marty! Ever since kindergarden, almost everyone started bullying him and calling him names coz he was chubby. Sue and I were his only friends till first grade. How would I know that the kids would stop playing with us just coz we were friends with him. It wasn’t fair. I had no choice but to stop talking to him. Sue got upset when I told her we needed to stop talking to Marty and instead hang out with Rina. Rina was the most popular girl in our class but she wasn’t really nice. She was actually kind of bossy. Anyway, I think everything was going to work out just fine for Marty coz everyone in class really wanted to go to Animal Palace and he probably thought that the kids would start being nice to him again. Maybe. Maybe not. I was surprised when he invited me. I was a little embarrassed when he gave me the invitation but I wanted to go so badly to see the python that everyone was talking about so I didn’t really think about it. I suddenly heard my name being called. It was my dad talking to Aunt Lucy on his cell phone. My dad asked her to bring over my favorite chocolate truffle cake. Usually my mom and I bake my cake together but then it wouldn’t be a surprise now would it? Actually, I was surprised that they were inviting Aunt Lucy. My mom calls her Aunt Loony not to her face of course and that she is a big gossip with fat thighs. I’m not really sure how the two are related.
I suddenly heard barking outside. I looked outside my window and I saw Dot playing with my seventeen year old brother Val. Not playing really, Val was just sitting there on the lawn all mopey, like he lost his guitar and Dot was running all around him. When Val was younger, he used to play with me all the time and has even babysat me when my mom had to go to the grocery store but for the last couple of years he’s been locked inside his room listening to music that sounds like pots being jammed together. He used to call me cute but now he thinks I’m a nuisance! My mom keeps saying that he is going through a phase and that I will too when I hit the terrible teens. She makes it sound like a disease. But for now we have to put up with his bad attitude and let him be. That’s fine with me. But I was mad to see Dot play with him. Dot was my only real friend after Sue stopped talking to me completely and now Dot seemed to like Val over me! Val never used to pay any attention to Dot and now it was like they were best friends. I was just about to complain to my mom about Val when I saw Mr. Mopey and his new best friend come in behind me. Val and I both began talking at once and my mom who was still on the phone waved us both away angrily. “Please!”, she said. “I am not in the mood for this and keep that stupid dog out! Everybody is coming over in about fifteen minutes so please go get ready.” We went upstairs in silence. Val went into his room and locked himself in. My mom would would have to yell for him to come down for dinner now.
I wore my favorite green and yellow polka dot skirt and the new white shirt my grandma bought me and came bounding down the stairs. I could hear voices downstairs so I put on my super surprised expression when I reached the bottom step. I was expecting to see a Happy Birthday Milly! banner but instead the living room looked completely different. My mom had cleared out the sofas and put our dinner table right in the center with lots of food. My grandma and Aunt Lucy were there. So were a lot of people I didn’t know. There were flowers everywhere and it seemed like almost everyone was wearing black. It was weird. My mom and dad’s eyes were red and I saw Val sitting quietly in a corner talking to one of his friends. No one even paid any attention to me. I was going to call out to my mom when I saw Dot come in from the kitchen door running towards me. The way he was running suddenly made me feel all clammy as I started remembering bit by bit. I was playing in the yard when Dot just bolted across the street. Our neighbor opposite had left a red ball lying around on his lawn which Dot spotted and I ran after him. I never saw the car come towards me.
